Put simply, this landscaping product is a form of vitrified paving. This means that it undergoes baking at incredibly high temperatures. Porcelain consists of naturally occurring materials. While the specific ingredients used may differ between manufacturers, they usually include premium fine clays, pure quartzitic sand, feldspar (a granitic mineral) and Kaolin (known in the UK as China Clay).
These materials undergo a mixing and grinding process with water to create a slurry that has no grittiness. The manufacturer then reduces the moisture level to around 6%.
After another mixing process, the blended powder is pressed into moulds and compacted, closing internal voids and air pockets. These moulds create smooth finishes with no surface relief as well as profiled surfaces and specific textures. Our landscapers offer a wide range of options.
A further drying process reduces the moisture content to just 1 to 1.5%. The slab undergoes a range of pressing, printing and pre-treatment processes. This creates the appearance of other materials, for example, marble, travertine or even timber.
The resulting slab then passes slowly through a specially designed kiln. This machine stretches as long as 100 metres and reaches temperatures between 1,200°C and 1,400 °C. To ensure superior quality, the cooling stage is equally as meticulous as the heating stage.
